The Sims 4 offers a number of different careers in the base game, which recently became free-to-play, and the Tech Guru is one of the more illustrious of your options. With the job itself based in all things technological, you’ll choose between becoming a professional gamer or starting your own smash-success website.
Both the eSports Gamer and Start Up Entrepreneur career paths in The Sims 4 Tech Guru career offer hefty payouts and some pretty sweet rewards, but the two paths themselves almost couldn’t be more different. We’ve broken down both paths of the Tech Guru career in this guide.
Tech Guru Career Overview
Games Or Gains: Choose Between ESports Gaming And Tech Start-Up Stardom
Perfect for both computer whizzes and the business-savvy alike, the Tech Guru career in The Sims 4 is one of the more lucrative career paths in the base game.
Though you won’t get to choose a specialty for the career until being promoted to Level Seven in the Tech Guru track, you’ll have plenty of time to begin building the similar skill sets required of both specializations.
The two paths in The Sims 4 Tech Guru career are:
- eSports Gamer, which leans more into the Video Gaming skill with a decent proficiency in Programming required to reach the top level.
- Since you’ll need to kick ass and take names in competitions, you’ll need to master the Video Gaming skill before Level Ten.
- Start Up Entrepreneur, a job focused on launching small web-based businesses using your prowess with Programming and Charisma.
- Though being able to chat up investors is important, entrepreneurs need to master the Programming skill to succeed.
The career doesn’t split until Level Seven, though, and the first six levels require both Video Gaming and Programming skills to advance.
Have Fun And Get Paid To Build Your Career Skills
Unfortunately for Sims choosing the Start Up Entrepreneur career path, the Charisma skill becomes important as soon as you choose a career specialty. Gamers, meanwhile, simply continue programming as their secondary career skill.
Regardless of which path you intend to choose for your Sim, it helps to give them a leg up by working on skills before accepting the job. Thankfully, as teens and young adults, all three skills are pretty easy to work on.
Unlike some skills for other careers that drain a Sims’ needs, building the Video Gaming skill builds your Sim’s fun meter. They’ll enjoy their time spent at the computer or in the Motion Gaming Rig, continuing so long as their other five needs are met.
And while Programming doesn’t have any need-based rewards, you can use Programming skills to earn extra cash on the side in your off-time.
These side hustles can begin as early as Level Two of the skill, with more money to be made the better you get at programming. Each level of the skill unlocks progressively more lucrative hacking opportunities – provided you don’t get caught.
Helpful Traits And Moods For Tech Gurus
Gaming Is A More Solitary Career
While we hate to play into stereotypes here, an aspiring eSports Gamer in The Sims 4 will be spending a lot of time at their desk gaming alone. Because of this, both the Lazy and Loner traits come in handy.
When a Sim is Lazy, they’ll be far keener to live a couch potato kind of life, gaining happy moodlets from inactivity.
Loners, meanwhile, thrive when left alone – which is how you’ll spend a lot of your time practicing – and because of this, see their social need decay slower than other Sims.
However, with a looming need to progress in the Programming skill, you’ll find that Genius Sims thrive in these careers.
Tech Start-Ups Require Charisma And Brains From Their CEOs
Unlike your gamer counterparts, you’ll begin doing a pretty good amount of socializing in the Tech Start-Up field. And because of this, you’ll need to be good with people, making more social traits a huge help.
Both the Outgoing and Self-Assured traits will help massively in this regard, with these Sims more apt to socialize on their own, to build relationships faster, and to be in Confident moods.
Additionally, those with the Genius trait will, like the other book-smart skills build the Programming skill faster than other Sims.
They’re also more inclined to be Focused, which is the Ideal Mood for the Tech Guru career.
In the tables below, we’ve broken down every level on both paths in The Sims 4 Tech Guru career.
Each level of the career has its own hours, pay, and daily tasks, and these change as you earn promotions. The career splits at Level Seven, when you’ll choose your specialty and receive tasks more oriented toward it.
