“With this step of hiring an experienced and accomplished construction management team, we’re moving ahead to provide a modernized recreation hub,” Yellowhead Mayor Wade Williams said in a statement.

“Our residents will get a multiplex that will deliver a range of recreation services and promote healthy, active living for current and new users.”

According to the Town of Edson, the YCE Multiplex will include an aquatic centre and new ice surface in addition to a renovation of Edson’s current Centennial Arena.

The two ice arena surfaces, curling rink and pool would serve the area, with the facility in Edson also including a walking loop and “potential space for a gymnasium.”

Town Communications Co-ordinator Steve Bethge told Postmedia that the project has an overall budget of $70 million.

During its Jan. 9 meeting, Edson council voted to award Clark Builders the work in exchange for 2.6 per cent of the construction budget, according to town communications.

Bethge told Postmedia that the planners hope to break ground this year, with an approximate three-year construction timeline.

In September 2023, the town and county had hired GEC Architecture for the project’s “architectural and design functions.”

According to Yellowhead County, the contract with GEC Architecture was worth $3.9 million.

Construction plans will proceed in 2024 with Clark Builders collaborating with GEC Architecture and the town and county on a schematic design, according to the town.

“Town council is excited to see this important step forward,” Edson Mayor Kevin Zahara said in a statement.

“We have the team in place to ensure we get a facility that is focused on functionality and meeting the needs of our regional community.

“A lot of work has occurred in the last several months to get us to this milestone in the project.”

This isn’t Clark Builders’ only major project in the region. The company was hired by the Town of Whitecourt in July 2022 to manage construction of a new roadway into Festival Park.

Clark Builders will also manage construction of the Whitecourt Culture and Events Centre, if it’s built.
